How the ways are counted

Megaways is a Big Time Gaming trademark, used under licence, as the screens of 5 Lions Megaways say. Its idea: every reel lands with a height of its own on each spin, and the number of ways to win is those heights multiplied. 5 Lions Megaways shows up to seven symbols on each of its six reels, which gives the 117,649 maximum in its rules; the official demo opens on reels of 2, 3, 3, 2, 2 and 2, and the counter above them reads 144.

A win still needs neighbouring reels from the left. In Divine Fortune Megaways each reel lands two to seven symbols, and a win starts on reel 1 and runs across two or more adjacent reels.

An extra row, tumbles or neither

Some Pragmatic Play titles lay a horizontal strip above the middle reels. In Great Rhino Megaways reels 1 and 6 hold up to 7 symbols and reels 2 to 5 up to 8, the eighth place being that strip, which spins on its own from right to left. At full height that is 7 x 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 x 7, or 200,704 ways, by our arithmetic, the maximum Buffalo King Megaways names too.

Wild West Gold Megaways has no extra row and no tumbles, so one spin cannot chain wins. Gonzo's Quest Megaways, Red Tiger's take on NetEnt's explorer, keeps the Avalanche: winning symbols explode and new ones fall in, with a multiplier that climbs to x5 in a spin.

Labels and limits differ

Pragmatic rates Great Rhino Megaways and Wild West Gold Megaways low volatility and 5 Lions Megaways and Buffalo King Megaways high, while Red Tiger's badge for Gonzo's Quest Megaways reads INSANE. Limits vary as much: Buffalo King Megaways caps a win at 5,000 times the bet and Great Rhino Megaways at 20,000, and Red Tiger lists 20,972x as the max payout of Gonzo's Quest Megaways.
