Six reels, up to seven symbols each
Red Tiger's page gives the grid as 6x7 under Reels/Rows and 117649 under Play lines max. The game's help explains both numbers: 'Each spin awards a different ways to win combination depending on the total number of symbols which lands on the reels', and 'Landing a maximum 7 symbols on each of the 6 reels offers a potential 117,649 MegaWays to win!' Seven to the sixth power is exactly 117,649, by our arithmetic.
Red Tiger's own screenshots print the ways for the spin under the title: MEGAWAYS 120 on one, 2304 on another, 4320 on a third. The 117,649 needs seven symbols on all six reels.
The help sorts the paying symbols into two rows of its Symbol Wins paytable: five high-paying symbols on the upper row and four low-paying ones on the lower row.
Avalanches and the multiplier bar
In the help's words, 'The symbols fall into positions on the reels, instead of spinning. Symbols in winning combinations explode and disappear, leaving space for a second Avalanche of symbols', and 'The Avalanches continue until there are no more wins.'
The Avalanche Multiplier rides on that chain. The help: 'In the basic game the first win way increases it to X2, the second to X3 and the third to X5 which remains for the duration of the spin and applies to all subsequent wins. The Avalanche Multiplier resets after the end of the spin.' The bar at the top of the screen in Red Tiger's screenshots reads X1, X2, X3 and X5.
For scale only: a R2 win paid at X5 becomes R10, and the same R2 at Free Fall's top step of X15 becomes R30, by our arithmetic with example amounts.
Earthquake and the Unbreakable Wilds
Earthquake is random: 'The slot may randomly start to shake and all low-paying symbols will be destroyed allowing only high-paying symbols to take their place in the following respins.' The help gives no figure for how often it comes.
Wilds follow their own rules. They 'do not break when they participate in a win', so a wild stays on the reels while the symbols around it explode. There are never more than two at once: 'The first one can land on the first three reels and the second one on the second three reels.' By the help, wilds 'substitute for both paying symbols and Free Fall symbols', and two Free Fall symbols with a wild are enough to start the bonus.
Free Fall: 9 to 18 free spins 🎁
The help's trigger: 'at least three Free Fall symbols or two Free Fall symbols and a Wild symbol, landing on adjacent reels starting from the leftmost reel.' Each symbol in that way 'contributes with +3 free spins for a possible total of 9, 12, 15 or 18', and 'Up to four Free Fall symbols can land on the reels.' The full 18 needs 'four Free Fall Symbols connected with two Wild symbols.'
Inside Free Fall the multiplier bar is steeper: X3, X6, X9 and X15. More free spins are won 'the same way Free Fall is triggered in Normal Game.'
The round has an unusual ending. 'After the end of the bonus round, the player returns to the previous scene, where the symbols that triggered Free Fall are destroyed for a chance of even more wins. The win multiplier from the last respin before the bonus round also remains until there are no more wins.' As we read it, the base-game chain that started the bonus picks up where it stopped.
How many free spins each trigger gives
Totals from the help; the combinations are our reading of 'each symbol contributes with +3 free spins', counting a wild as a symbol of the way.
| Symbols in the triggering way | Free spins |
|---|---|
| 3: three Free Fall, or two Free Fall and a Wild | 9 |
| 4: for example four Free Fall, or three and a Wild | 12 |
| 5: for example four Free Fall and a Wild | 15 |
| 6: four Free Fall and two Wilds, the help's maximum | 18 |
Red Tiger, NetEnt and Big Time Gaming
Three companies' names sit on this game. Evolution's games site calls Gonzo 'NetEnt's historical explorer' who 'comes to life in this Red Tiger title', and says the game 'uses NetEnt's revolutionary Avalanche Feature'. The Megaways mechanic is Big Time Gaming's: Red Tiger's banner reads 'UNDER LICENSE FROM' next to the BTG badge, and the game's intro screen 'MEGAWAYS UNDER LICENCE FROM' with the same badge.
The original Gonzo's Quest is a separate NetEnt game, and nothing on this page is taken from it.
26.25%, 20,972x and an INSANE badge
Red Tiger's page puts 26.25% next to Hit Frequency, a little over one spin in four paying something, by our arithmetic. Its volatility badge reads INSANE, while Evolution's games site files the game under high. Our facts panel keeps the studio's badge.
Under Max payout Red Tiger writes '20 972 x bet', the studio's figure and not a promise for any spin. Applied to a R1 stake it would be R20,972, and to R0.20 R4,194.40, by our arithmetic.
On the return the two sites differ: 95.77% on Red Tiger's page, '94.66% / 96.00%' on Evolution's games site, which does not explain the two figures. They agree on 2020 as the release year. No staking pattern or betting system beats the house edge at any of these returns.
Gonzo's Quest Megaways RTP and volatility 📊
Red Tiger gives Gonzo's Quest Megaways's return to player as 95.77%.
Volatility is insane: the step above extreme on Red Tiger's scale: most spins return little or nothing, and the return rests on rare, very large hits.
Top payout: 20972x.

Pros, cons and verdict ⚖️
- Avalanches let one spin pay several times, with the multiplier rising to X5
- Free Fall's multiplier steps run X3, X6, X9 and X15
- After Free Fall the triggering symbols are destroyed and the chain carries on
- Red Tiger's volatility badge for the game reads INSANE
- Earthquake comes at random, and the help gives no figure for how often
- The base-game multiplier stops at X5 and resets at the end of every spin
Gonzo's Quest Megaways puts NetEnt's explorer and his falling blocks on a six-reel Megaways grid, and Red Tiger's rules keep the chain going: the multiplier climbs within a spin, Earthquake clears out the low symbols, and after Free Fall the base game carries on with the multiplier it had before the bonus. With an INSANE badge and, by our arithmetic from the 26.25% hit frequency, about three spins in four paying nothing, pick a rand stake that can sit through long dry runs.
