Fruit Shop Megaways in South Africa: Free Spins and a Multiplier to x10
Fruit Shop Megaways is a fruit-themed NetEnt slot released in January 2021. It has six reels, and each one lands between two and seven symbols a spin, for up to 117,649 ways to win. Wins run from the leftmost reel, cherries from two reels and every other symbol from three. A fruit win in the main game awards free spins, and inside the round a multiplier starts at x1 and rises with each winning spin, up to x10. NetEnt puts the hit frequency at 17%.

How Fruit Shop Megaways works
Each of the six reels lands between two and seven symbols a spin, so the grid can change shape from spin to spin, and a counter at the top of the reels shows how many Megaways, or ways to win, the spin has. By our arithmetic, the count is the symbols on each reel multiplied together.
A win needs matching symbols in any position on three or more adjacent reels, counted from the leftmost reel with no gaps; cherries pay from two. Every extra copy of the symbol on those reels creates more winning Megaways, only the longest combination of each symbol is paid, and wins on different Megaways are added. Paytable values change with your stake.
Besides the wild, the reels carry five fruits (cherries, plum, lemon, orange and watermelon) and the card ranks A, K, Q, J and 10. NetEnt's page lists two features, Free Spins and Wild Substitutions.
Counting Megaways: three grids
Our arithmetic. The first and last rows match NetEnt's lowest and highest counts; the middle row is our own example.
| Symbols on reels 1 to 6 | Megaways |
|---|---|
| 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2 | 64 |
| 3, 5, 2, 7, 4, 6 | 5,040 |
| 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7 | 117,649 |
One spin, worked through
Say oranges land once on reel 1, twice on reel 2 and once each on reels 3 and 4, with no orange or wild on reel 5 and no wild on reels 2 to 4. By our reading, that is a four-reel orange combination on 1 x 2 x 1 x 1 = 2 Megaways: two wins at the paytable's four-orange value. Cherries on reels 1 and 2, but not on reel 3, would pay separately, and by the main game's table below the orange and cherry combinations would award 3 + 1 = 4 free spins, our arithmetic.
The wild: reels 2 to 5
The wild is the Fruit Shop logo in a wooden frame on a yellow background. It lands on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5, in the main game and in free spins, substitutes for every symbol and pays the highest winning Megaways combination the paytable allows. The help gives it no multiplier of its own. With no wild on reels 1 and 6, every win starts with the symbol itself on reel 1, and a six-reel win needs it on reel 6 too, by our reading.
Free spins per winning combination 🎁
From the game's help. Fruits award the same number in the main game and in free spins; card ranks appear in the free spins table, not in the main game's.
| Combination across | Cherries | Watermelon, orange, plum or lemon | A, K, Q, J or 10 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 reels | 1 | - | - |
| 3 reels | 2 | 2 | 1 |
| 4 reels | 3 | 3 | 2 |
| 5 reels | 4 | 4 | 3 |
| 6 reels | 5 | 5 | 4 |
Free spins: a multiplier that climbs to x10 🎁
In the main game, a Megaways win on any fruit pays and also awards one to five free spins. A symbol awards spins once per spin, for its longest combination, however many Megaways it wins on; when several symbols win together, their spins are added. Card ranks pay too, but the main game's table lists no spins for them.
The round opens at x1. The multiplier rises by 1 whenever a free spin brings at least one winning combination, stays put after a spin without one, and stops at x10 until the round ends: nine winning spins take it there, by our count. Wins are multiplied by it, so a combination the paytable values at R2 at your stake pays R10 at x5 and R20 at x10, by our arithmetic.
Inside the round, card ranks join the fruits in adding spins. The round uses the stake that started it, and its total is added to that spin's win.

What the numbers say about a session
NetEnt's hit frequency of 17% means, by our arithmetic, that a little more than one spin in six pays something; it counts how often spins pay, not how much.
The group's two official sites label the volatility differently: NetEnt's page shows a medium badge, used on this page, and Evolution's games site says high. NetEnt gives the return as 96.06%, and Evolution as 95.06% / 96.06% without saying what the two figures stand for; the game's own help states, under Return to Player, the theoretical return of the game you open.
No staking pattern or betting system beats the house edge, so pick a stake your budget can carry for the whole session.
Not the 2011 Fruit Shop
NetEnt lists the original Fruit Shop from 2011 as a separate game, reviewed on its own page here. The two share a name and a theme, and this page takes no rule or figure from the older game; Evolution's games site calls this one a sequel. A tile with the shorter name is the other game. The key art on NetEnt's page prints 'Under license from' beside a small round red logo lettered BTG, under the Megaways name.

Pros, cons and verdict ⚖️
- Up to 117,649 Megaways, counted above the reels
- Fruit wins award free spins, from two cherries up
- Each winning free spin raises the multiplier by 1, up to x10; a spin without a win leaves it as it is
- Card ranks extend the round too
- No bonus buy on NetEnt's page or in the game's help
- By NetEnt's 17% hit frequency, most spins pay nothing
- No wild on reels 1 and 6, by our reading of the rules
- A round from two cherries alone can be a single spin
Fruit Shop Megaways builds its feature out of ordinary wins: a fruit combination opens free spins, and inside the round every winning spin lifts a multiplier towards x10 while fruit and card-rank wins add spins. It suits a player who likes short rules on a changing grid, not one looking for a bonus buy.
Fruit Shop Megaways FAQ ❓
How do you trigger free spins in Fruit Shop Megaways?
With a Megaways win on any fruit in the main game. Cherries award 1 to 5 spins for combinations across two to six reels; the watermelon, orange, plum and lemon award 2 to 5 for three to six reels. The main game's table lists no card ranks.
How does the free spins multiplier work?
It starts at x1 and rises by 1 after any free spin with at least one winning combination; a spin without a win leaves it unchanged. It stops at x10 for the rest of the round, and wins in the round are multiplied by it.
Can free spins be retriggered?
Yes. During free spins, a Megaways win on any fruit or card rank adds spins: cherries 1 to 5, the other fruits 2 to 5 and card ranks 1 to 4, depending on how many reels the combination covers.
Is Fruit Shop Megaways the same game as Fruit Shop?
No. NetEnt lists the 2011 Fruit Shop as a separate game with its own page, rules and figures. This page describes only the six-reel Megaways game, so check the full name on the tile.
