Gorilla Kingdom in South Africa: 1024 Ways and the Totem Stone
Gorilla Kingdom is a NetEnt video slot released in April 2020, played on five reels of four rows with 1024 ways to win. Its features sit inside one round: three or more scatters start 10 to 20 free spins, more scatters during the round add 10 to 20 more, and a Totem Stone of four jungle animals fills with gorilla masks until each animal turns into the gorilla symbol.

How Gorilla Kingdom works
The grid is five reels by four rows, 20 positions by our count. NetEnt describes the game as having up to 1024 bet ways, and its game page lists 1024 as both the minimum and the maximum, so by our reading every spin plays all of them. The number is the grid's own arithmetic: four rows on each of five reels gives 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 = 1024 combinations, our sum.
NetEnt's page does not set out the paytable or the rule for how a way pays, and the game's help file was not available to us, so this page leaves both out.
NetEnt's page names three features, all of them tied to free spins: Free Spins, Extra Free Spins, and Symbol Transform with the Totem Stone. It lists no feature buy; the way into the round it names is scatters.

Free spins and extra free spins 🎁
In NetEnt's words, three or more scatter symbols appearing anywhere on the reels award 10 to 20 free spins. NetEnt's page gives the range, not the count for each number of scatters.
The round can grow from inside. Three up to five scatters appearing anywhere on the reels during free spins grant 10 to 20 extra free spins. The page states no limit on how often that can happen.
What scatters award
NetEnt's game page, Game Features section.
| When | Scatters anywhere | Award |
|---|---|---|
| Main game | 3 or more | 10 to 20 free spins |
| During free spins | 3 up to 5 | 10 to 20 extra free spins |
Symbol Transform and the Totem Stone
This is what sets the free spins apart. During the round, a gorilla symbol on the reels can turn at random into a gorilla mask. The mask fills a slot on the Totem Stone, and a gorilla symbol stays on the reels where it was.
The Totem Stone holds four animal panels: Leopard, Hornbill, Okapi and Pangolin, each with six slots. When all six slots of one panel are filled with gorilla masks, that animal turns into the gorilla symbol. Once all 24 slots are filled, NetEnt says only the gorilla symbol appears on the reels.
By our reading, then, the round changes as it goes on: every finished panel takes one animal off the reels and puts gorillas in its place, and a full stone leaves gorillas alone. What a gorilla pays is in the game's paytable, which NetEnt's page does not print, so no win is worked out here.

| Panel | Slots | When all are filled |
|---|---|---|
| Leopard | 6 | The leopard turns into the gorilla symbol |
| Hornbill | 6 | The hornbill turns into the gorilla symbol |
| Okapi | 6 | The okapi turns into the gorilla symbol |
| Pangolin | 6 | The pangolin turns into the gorilla symbol |
| All four | 24 | Only the gorilla symbol appears on the reels |
What the numbers say about a session
NetEnt's page gives a hit frequency of 36%. By our arithmetic that is a little more than one spin in three returning something, and a little under two in three returning nothing. It counts how often spins pay, not how much.
Both of the studio group's sites agree on the rest: a return of 96.03%, and a medium volatility, shown as a MEDIUM badge on NetEnt's page and as Mid on Evolution's games site. The 1,700 x bet that NetEnt lists as the max payout is the studio's figure; its page does not call it a cap. On a R1 stake it comes to R1,700 by our arithmetic.
NetEnt's page quotes stakes in euro, from EUR 0.10 to EUR 350. What a casino offers in rand is its own choice. With about two spins in three returning nothing, the stake decides how many of those a session can absorb; it does not change the 96.03% return.
How it differs from NetEnt's other slots here
Gorilla Kingdom is the only NetEnt slot on this site with 1024 ways. Twin Spin uses 243 ways on a 5x3 grid and links reels in the main game, while Dazzle Me keeps 76 fixed lines. Here the main game has no feature of its own on NetEnt's page: everything it lists happens in free spins.

Pros, cons and verdict ⚖️
- 1024 ways, listed by NetEnt as both the minimum and the maximum
- Free spins can be extended by 10 to 20 at a time with scatters in the round
- The Totem Stone changes the reels as the round goes on, panel by panel
- A 36% hit frequency on NetEnt's page, a little over one spin in three by our arithmetic
- NetEnt's page lists no feature in the main game itself
- The free spin count is given only as 10 to 20, not per number of scatters
- No feature buy is listed, so the round comes only from scatters
- By our arithmetic, nearly two spins in three pay nothing
Gorilla Kingdom puts all its ideas into one round: scatters that start and extend free spins, and a Totem Stone that swaps four animals for gorillas as masks collect. Outside that round it is a plain 1024-ways game with a medium label and a 36% hit frequency. It suits a player who wants a free spins round that builds as it runs; anyone who wants features in the main game or a bonus buy will not find them in NetEnt's list.
Gorilla Kingdom FAQ ❓
How do you trigger free spins in Gorilla Kingdom?
Three or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels in the main game award 10 to 20 free spins, by NetEnt's game page. The page gives the range only, not how many spins each number of scatters brings.
Can Gorilla Kingdom free spins be retriggered?
Yes. NetEnt's page says three up to five scatters appearing anywhere on the reels during free spins grant 10 to 20 extra free spins. The page does not state a limit on how often that can happen.
What is the Totem Stone in Gorilla Kingdom?
A free spins feature. A gorilla symbol can turn into a mask that fills one of six slots on a panel for the leopard, hornbill, okapi or pangolin. A full panel turns that animal into the gorilla symbol; with all 24 slots filled, only gorillas appear on the reels.
How many ways to win does Gorilla Kingdom have?
1024. NetEnt lists 1024 as both the minimum and the maximum, so by our reading every spin plays them all. The figure is four rows on each of five reels multiplied together, our sum.
How often does Gorilla Kingdom pay?
NetEnt gives a hit frequency of 36%, which by our arithmetic is a little more than one spin in three returning something. It is a long-run count of paying spins, not of their size, and it cannot predict how one session ends.
