How Hot to Burn works
Hot to Burn is laid out like the fruit machines it copies: five reels, three rows and five paylines that are always all in play. The bet menu reads "Betting on 5 lines" and has fields for the coins per line, the coin value and the total bet, but none for the number of lines, so every spin is five equal line bets. Line 1 is the middle row, line 2 the top row and line 3 the bottom row. Line 4 is a V from the top corners down to the bottom of the middle reel, and line 5 is the same V upside down.
A line pays when matching symbols run from the leftmost reel to the right on adjacent reels, so three 7s on reels two, three and four pay nothing. Only the highest win on each line counts, and wins on different lines in the same spin are added together. The symbols are a flaming 7, a watermelon, a strawberry, a plum, an orange, a lemon and cherries, plus a gold star.
The star is the scatter and ignores the lines. Three, four or five stars anywhere on the screen pay 2, 10 or 50 times the total bet, even on a spin where no line wins. Every other pay is a line win, worked out on the bet per line, which here is a fifth of your total bet.
What the rules leave out matters as much: no wild, no free spins, no bonus game and no multiplier, so no spin sets anything up for the next one. Pragmatic's launch note called the game "a throwback to the vintage era".
Hot to Burn paytable in multiples of the total bet
Pragmatic's rules screen prints every pay as cash at the current stake. In the official demo, at its default total bet of $2.00, five 7s show $2,000.00, which makes each figure a clean multiple of the total bet. In rand, five 7s return R1,000 for every R1 staked. Line pays count from the leftmost reel; stars count anywhere.

What the Hot to Burn paytable adds up to
- The 7 is the only big pay. No other symbol pays more than 100 times the bet. The 200x and 1,000x results both need 7s running from the leftmost reel along one of the five lines, and no feature or multiplier in the game can build towards them.
- No win is smaller than the stake. With the bet split only five ways, each line carries a fifth of it, and the line pays are large next to that. The smallest entry in the table, two cherries, returns exactly the total bet, and three of the lowest fruit return four times it.
- Two cherries hand the stake back, nothing more. A spin with two cherries on a line and nothing else is paid as a win, but it leaves your balance where it was before the spin. Worth remembering when a run of small wins feels better than the balance says it is.
Low volatility on five lines: what a session looks like 📊
The rules screen in Pragmatic's official demo labels Hot to Burn low volatility and explains the term in its own words: such games "pay out more often in smaller amounts, while still having the chance to win big". The smallest amounts in this paytable are easy to name: the 1x to 4x pays for two cherries on a line, three stars anywhere, and three plums, oranges, lemons or cherries on a line.
The big pays are the 7s. Four 7s pay 200 times the bet and five pay 1,000 times, and because nothing carries over from one spin to the next, either result has to land in a single ordinary spin. The volatility label does not say how often that happens, and the rules screen gives no odds for it.
The stake changes the rand amounts and nothing else. Every pay scales with the bet, so the return to player is the same at the smallest stake as at the largest, and no staking pattern, doubling up or cutting back, beats the house edge. What the stake does decide is how many spins a budget buys, and in a game without a bonus round those spins are the whole session.
