Double Stacks is NetEnt's classic fruit slot from September 2018, on five reels and three rows with 10 bet lines. Its one twist sits in the base game: when a reel fills with one of the four highest paying symbols, every symbol on that reel counts twice, so a single line can hold a 10-symbol win. Three or more scatters start free spins, where stacked wilds join the reels.

How Double Stacks works

The grid is five reels by three rows and wins are paid on bet lines. NetEnt's game page lists 10 as both the minimum and the maximum number of play lines, so by our reading all 10 lines are in play on every spin and there is no line count to set. Its bet range is €0.10 to €200.00 a spin.

The look is a fruit machine. NetEnt's own banner for the game shows a cherry, a plum, a golden bell, a red 7 and a blue diamond around the logo, and its free spins screenshot adds a BAR. Evolution's games site sums the game up as the classic fruit machine theme with a few modern twists, naming stacked wilds among them.

The game has two features, both described in a sentence or two on NetEnt's page: the Double Stacks feature in the main game and the free spins with stacked wilds. Everything else is plain line play.

The Double Stacks feature, step by step

From the Double Stacks Feature text on NetEnt's game page.

  1. A reel fills with one symbol
All three positions of a reel show the same symbol, and that symbol is one of the four highest paying ones.
  2. The symbols double
In NetEnt's words, these symbols double and count as two symbols when the win for that spin is counted.
  3. The line win is counted
Each full reel adds two symbols to a line instead of one, so NetEnt says a single bet line can carry up to a 10-symbol win.

How full reels change the symbol count

Our arithmetic from NetEnt's rule, for a line that runs across all five reels with one of the four top symbols. NetEnt publishes no paytable on its pages, so this table shows only how many symbols the win counts, not what it pays.

Full reels on the lineSymbols the win counts (our sum)
0 5
1 6
2 7
3 8

Which symbols the feature covers

NetEnt's text limits the feature to the four highest paying symbols and does not name them. NetEnt's own free spins screenshot shows a panel above the reels with four symbols, each next to an amount: a diamond, a red 7, a BAR and a bell. By our reading these are the four, but the help screen of the game at your casino is the place to confirm it.

A full reel of a lower symbol, such as a cherry or a plum, is not covered by the rule as NetEnt words it, so by that wording those symbols count once each.

The rule also speaks of 'that spin' only. Nothing on NetEnt's page says the doubled symbols carry over to the next spin, so read the feature as a spin-by-spin event.

Free spins and stacked wilds 🎁

Three or more scatter symbols in the main game start the free spins, NetEnt says, and during free spins stacked wilds are added to the reels. A stacked wild is a wild that can cover more than one position of a reel.

NetEnt's pages do not say how many free spins the scatters award, whether the scatters pay on their own, or whether the free spins can be won again inside the round. This page leaves those details out rather than guess; the game's help at your casino lists them.

What a 16% hit rate means for a session

NetEnt gives a hit frequency of 16%. If it counts every spin that pays something, that is about one paying spin in six, by our arithmetic, and five in six that return nothing. The figure says nothing about the size of the wins that do land.

The two official sites label the volatility differently: MEDIUM on NetEnt's page and High on Evolution's games site. They use different scales, so the page gives both. Either way, pick a stake that fits your budget for the length of session you have in mind, and do not chase losses with a bigger bet. No staking pattern beats the house edge.

The top figure also comes in two versions: 'Max payout 1 700 x bet' in NetEnt's facts panel, and 'up to 1000x your stake on a single spin' on Evolution's games site. Neither page calls its figure a cap, so this page gives both as the studio's figures and sets neither as the maximum win.

Double Stacks RTP and volatility 📊

NetEnt gives Double Stacks's return to player as 96.10%.

Volatility is medium: small wins mixed with occasional bigger ones.

Pros, cons and verdict ⚖️

Pros
  • A simple rule: a full reel of a top symbol counts twice
  • Up to a 10-symbol win on one line, in NetEnt's words
  • Stacked wilds join the reels in free spins
  • 10 lines, listed as both minimum and maximum on NetEnt's page
Cons
  • A 16% hit frequency, as NetEnt states it
  • NetEnt's pages publish no paytable or free spins count
  • The two official sites give different volatility labels
  • Two different top figures, 1,700x and 1,000x

Double Stacks is a fruit machine with one idea added: fill a reel with a top symbol and that reel counts double on every line it touches. With a 16% hit frequency on NetEnt's page, most spins return nothing, and the game is built around the spins where full reels line up. It suits a player who likes a classic look and a rule that is easy to follow.

Double Stacks FAQ ❓

How does the Double Stacks feature work?

When a reel is entirely filled with one of the four highest paying symbols, those symbols double and count as two when the spin's win is counted. NetEnt says this can give up to a 10-symbol win on one bet line.

What is Double Stacks' RTP?

96.10%, the same figure on NetEnt's game page and on Evolution's games site. Before a real-money spin, open the game's help at your casino and read the RTP line it shows there for that version of the game.

How do you trigger free spins in Double Stacks?

Land three or more scatter symbols in the main game. During the free spins, stacked wilds are added to the reels. NetEnt's pages do not state how many free spins you get, so check the game's help at your casino.

How many lines does Double Stacks have?

Ten. NetEnt's page lists 10 as both the minimum and the maximum number of play lines, so by our reading every line is in play on each spin and you only choose the stake.

What is the maximum win in Double Stacks?

The two official sites give different figures: 1,700 times the bet in NetEnt's facts panel and up to 1,000 times the stake on a single spin on Evolution's games site. Neither calls its figure a cap.
