Mental is a Nolimit City slot released on 31 August 2021, set in a sepia-toned mental institute with five characters, Patient-1 to Patient-5. Under the theme sits a stack of the studio's mechanics: Fire Frames that split symbols in two, Enhancer Cells that hand out xWays, xNudge and xSplit, Dead Patient multipliers from x5 to x9999, three free spins modes and a top payout of 66,666 times the base bet.

How Mental works
Nolimit City's game page gives the reels and rows of Mental as 3-5. The setting is a mental institute: the studio's own text introduces Patient-1 to Patient-5 as the characters of the game and calls the look sepia-toned. On the studio's feature illustrations the patients appear as portrait symbols, next to other symbols such as a skull and a grave plaque that reads Patient 1820-1845.
Most of what happens on a spin starts with the Fire Frames. Nolimit City's game sheet describes them as 1 to 13 random positions on the reels that split a symbol into two parts.
When 4 or 6 Fire Frames appear, the Enhancer Cells come into play. In the studio's words they boost the chance of wins with xWays, xNudge, xSplit and other boosters.
The x-mechanics and the special symbols
As Nolimit City describes them on its game page and in its game sheet for Mental.
- xWays. An xWays symbol that lands reveals a stack of the same symbol, which increases the ways available to win.
- xSplit. An xSplit symbol splits all symbols to its left into two and then turns into a wild. An xSplit to the right of a Scatter turns it into a Super Scatter.
- xNudge. A wild that is not centred on its reel nudges up or down to fill the reel, and its multiplier grows by 1 with each nudge.
- Dead Patient. Landing two Dead Patient symbols gives the chance of a random multiplier from x5 to x9999 on a patient symbol.
- Mental Transform. When the Spider symbol lands, it transforms symbols on the reels.
Three free spins modes and what triggers each 🎁
From Nolimit City's game page and game sheet. Every mode starts with three Scorpion symbols; the number of Spider symbols that land with them sets which one.
| Mode | Trigger | What Nolimit City says it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Autopsy Freespins | 3 Scorpion symbols | Fire Frames stay sticky; may be upgraded to Lobotomy or Mental Freespins |
| Lobotomy Freespins | 3 Scorpions and a Spider | The Spider is sticky and awards Mental Transform on each spin; a Dead Multiplier is transferred to a Patient symbol; may be upgraded to Mental Freespins |
| Mental Freespins | 3 Scorpions and 2 Spiders | Spider symbols are sticky and the Dead Multiplier never decreases |
Two builds of the game and two return figures
Nolimit City's game page shows a return to player of 96.08%. The studio's game sheet, linked from the same page, adds that Mental is available with a dual RTP setup: 96.08% and 94.20%, under the game IDs Mental and MentalDX1. Evolution's games site lists the same two figures, "94.20% / 96.08%", without saying which build is which.
The sheet splits the 96.08% into 58.16% from the base game and 37.93% from free spins, so most of the return comes from ordinary spins. By our arithmetic the gap between the two builds is 1.88 points: over R1,000 of total stakes, the long-run average return would be about R960.80 on one build and R942 on the other. That is an average over a very long run, not what any session pays.
The page does not say which build a given casino runs. The rules screen inside the game at your casino is the place to check it before you play.
What the studio's figures say about the swings
The labels differ by source. Nolimit City's game page shows a badge that reads Volatility Insane, its own game sheet rates the game Extreme (10), and Evolution's games site calls it High.
The sheet gives a hit frequency of 34.19%: by our arithmetic roughly 65.8% of spins, about two in three, end without a win. It puts the free spins at 1 in 216 spins and a win of 100 times the bet at 1 in 831, both from 10 billion simulated spins. With R0.40 spins, 216 of them come to R86.40 by our sum. That is a long-run average, so a session can run well past it with no bonus at all.
The top payout is 66,666 times the base bet, which the sheet gives as about 1 in 18 million spins. Nolimit City calls it a set maximum: once it is reached, the game round ends. At R0.40 that is R26,666.40 by our arithmetic.
No staking pattern beats the house edge. Pick a rand amount you can afford to lose before you start, and stop there.
Buying a bonus
Nolimit City's Nolimit Bonus lets a player buy straight into one of the game's bonus features, in the studio's words, at prices from 80 to 1,000 times the base bet. By our arithmetic that is R32 to R400 at a R0.40 bet, or R80 to R1,000 at R1. Neither the game page nor the sheet gives the price of each feature separately, or a return figure for buying.
The studio adds that the Nolimit Bonus may be removed in some regulated markets, so the option may not appear at every casino. A bought bonus is still a bet: the price is paid whatever the round returns.
Mental, not Mental 2
Mental 2 is a different game: Evolution's games site gives it a page of its own. Everything here is about the original Mental of 2021. On Nolimit City's page for Mental, the summary paragraph under the game describes a World War II submarine slot instead, so the facts here come from the game features, the x-mechanics and the game sheet.
Mental RTP and volatility 📊
Nolimit City gives Mental's return to player as 96.08%.
Nolimit City supplies Mental in 2 RTP settings - 96.08% and 94.20% - and each operator picks one. The highest is 96.08% and the lowest 94.20%: a 1.88-point gap on the same game with the same name.
Volatility is insane: a label the studio places above extreme: most spins return little or nothing, and the return rests on rare, very large hits.
Top payout: 66666x.

Pros, cons and verdict ⚖️
- The studio publishes hit frequency, free spins rate and the odds of the cap
- Three free spins modes, chosen by the Spider symbols that land
- A set maximum of 66,666x that ends the round when reached
- About two spins in three pay nothing, by our arithmetic
- Two builds, 96.08% and 94.20%, and the page does not say which a casino runs
- Many interacting mechanics make the rules long to read
Mental piles Nolimit City's mechanics onto one grid: Fire Frames that split symbols, Enhancer Cells with xWays, xNudge and xSplit, Dead Patient multipliers and three free spins modes that step up with the Spiders. The studio's own numbers point to frequent spins without a win and a rare top payout. Check which RTP build your casino runs, keep the stake small and read the rules screen first.

What is the maximum win in Mental?
Nolimit City sets the maximum payout at 66,666 times the base bet, and the game round ends when it is reached. Its game sheet puts the chance at about 1 in 18 million spins, from a simulation of 10 billion spins.
What is the RTP of Mental?
The game page shows 96.08%. Nolimit City's game sheet says the game comes in two builds, 96.08% and 94.20%, so the figure at a given casino depends on which build it runs. The rules screen in the game shows it.
