How Gates of Olympus works
There are no paylines. Symbols land on a six-by-five grid and you are paid for having enough of the same symbol anywhere on that grid, regardless of where they sit. This is what 'pay anywhere' or 'scatter pays' means, and it is why the game feels different from a classic slot even before anything special happens.
When you win, the winning symbols disappear and new ones drop into the gaps. That is a tumble. If the new arrangement also pays, it happens again, and it keeps going until a drop pays nothing. One spin can therefore be a chain of several wins rather than a single result.
On top of that, Zeus periodically drops multiplier orbs onto the grid. Here is the part that trips people up: the orbs do not multiply the win of the tumble they land on. They are collected, and the total of all orbs from the whole spin sequence is applied once, at the end, to the combined winnings of that spin.
That single rule is why the game produces the enormous results it is known for. A long tumble chain that happens to collect several orbs applies all of them together to everything the chain paid. It is also why most spins produce nothing remarkable: you need the chain and the orbs in the same spin.
The features, and what each actually costs
- Free spins. Triggered by enough scatters. In free spins the multiplier total does not reset between spins; it accumulates across the round. This is the difference between the base game and the bonus, and it is the reason the bonus is where the game's big results live.
- Ante bet. An optional higher stake per spin that improves your chance of triggering the free spins. It is a trade, not a bonus: you pay more per spin for a better trigger rate. By the game's rules the stake rises by a quarter, the chance of triggering free spins naturally doubles and the cap on a round's win goes from 5,000x to 4,000x the bet: by our arithmetic the same R10,000 on a R2 spin, which costs R2.50 with the ante.
- Buy feature, where the operator allows it. Pay a large multiple of your stake to enter free spins immediately. Some jurisdictions and operators disable it. It does not improve the game's return; it concentrates your budget into fewer, larger swings.
- Tumbles in the base game. Available on every spin, no trigger needed. The base game can produce good results on its own; it just cannot accumulate multipliers across spins the way the bonus does.
Two things worth knowing about this game
The first is thinking the orbs apply to the tumble they appear on. They do not. They are banked and applied to the spin's total at the end. Watching for 'the orb landed on a small win, what a waste' is a misreading of what just happened.
The second is treating a long run without a bonus as the game being due. Each spin is independent. A hundred spins without free spins tells you nothing about spin 101.
