Starlight Princess in South Africa: Pay Anywhere and 2x to 500x Multipliers
Starlight Princess is Pragmatic Play's pay-anywhere slot from September 2021, which the studio's launch post calls its first anime-inspired videoslot. Eight or more matching symbols pay wherever they land on the six-by-five grid, wins tumble, and winged hearts carrying multipliers from 2x to 500x can land in any spin. In free spins, multipliers from winning spins add up to a total that lasts the whole round. The game's own screens rate it medium volatility, and a win is capped at 5,000 times the bet.

How Starlight Princess pays
Starlight Princess pays by count, not by line. The official demo shows six reels of five symbols, 30 positions, and the rules say the total number of the same symbol on the screen at the end of a spin decides the win, wherever those symbols sit. The paytable starts at eight of a kind and pays in three steps: 8 or 9, 10 or 11, and 12 to 30.
A win triggers a tumble: the paying symbols vanish, the others slide down, and fresh symbols fill the gaps from the top. The rules put no cap on the number of tumbles. They stop when one brings no new win, and only then do the sequence's wins reach the balance.
Wins on different symbols in one result are added together, and the scatter, the princess's portrait, pays in any position on a scale of its own.
What each Starlight Princess symbol pays, in multiples of the bet
The demo's rules screen gives pays in dollars at the current bet and the symbols as unnamed pictures. The names are ours, and each multiple is the screen's figure divided by the $2.00 default bet (our arithmetic).
| Symbol | 12 to 30 | 10 or 11 | 8 or 9 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun badge | 50x | 25x | 10x |
| Pink heart badge | 25x | 10x | 2.5x |
| Moon badge | 15x | 5x | 2x |
| Star badge | 12x | 2x | 1.5x |
| Red heart gem | 10x | 1.5x | 1x |
| Blue gem | 8x | 1.2x | 0.8x |
| Green gem | 5x | 1x | 0.5x |
| Teal gem | 4x | 0.9x | 0.4x |
| Yellow gem | 2x | 0.75x | 0.25x |
What the table adds up to
- Eight is the threshold. The table starts at eight, so seven of any symbol in it pay nothing. Its smallest pay, eight or nine yellow gems, is 0.25x the total bet: 50 cents on a R2 spin, by our arithmetic.
- Twelve is the big step. Every symbol pays more from twelve, and for the star badge, the red heart gem and the blue gem at least six times what ten or eleven pay: 12x against 2x, 10x against 1.5x, 8x against 1.2x (our arithmetic). The sun badge only doubles, from 25x to 50x.
- The scatter pays as well as triggers. Four, five or six scatters pay 3x, 5x or 100x the total bet: R6, R10 or R200 on a R2 spin, by our arithmetic. Four or more also start the free spins.
Multiplier hearts: added together, not multiplied
The multipliers are winged hearts in green, blue, pink or orange, separate from the paytable's pink heart badge. The rules put them on all reels, landing at random in spins and tumbles, in the base game and in free spins. Each takes one of fifteen values: 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 10x, 12x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x or 500x.
When a tumble sequence ends, the values of all hearts on the screen are added together and multiply the sequence's total win. By our arithmetic, a 5x and a 10x make 15x, not the 50x that multiplying would give, so a sequence that won R4 on a R2 spin pays R60. A heart in a sequence with no win has nothing to multiply, and only the free spins rules keep a total beyond one sequence.
Free spins: a total multiplier that lasts the round 🎁
Four or more scatters anywhere open the round with 15 free spins. Three or more during it add 5 more spins, and special reels, the rules say, are in play.
In the round, a heart that lands in a winning spin adds its value to a total multiplier that stays until the round ends, and whenever a new heart lands in a winning spin, the total multiplies that win. By our arithmetic, hearts of 10x, 5x and 25x in three winning spins make a 40x total, and the third spin's R4 win, multiplied by 40x, pays R160.
The game page speaks of the total 'boosting wins for the rest of free spins'. The rules name a condition, a new heart in a winning spin, and say nothing about multiplying a win with no heart on the screen.
Winnings are paid when the round completes. Should its total win hit 5,000 times the bet, the round stops on the spot: the win is paid up to that cap and whatever features remain are forfeited.
The ante and the buy, in rand
Switching on the ante, a button that reads DOUBLE CHANCE TO WIN FEATURE, lifts the bet multiplier from 20x to 25x: the demo's $2.00 bet becomes $2.50, so by our arithmetic a R2 spin costs R2.50. According to the rules, the chance to win free spins naturally is doubled and more scatters sit on the reels, while the paytable on the rules screen does not change: a R2.50 ante spin pays what a R2 spin pays. With the ante on, the win limit reads 4,000x the bet, and 4,000 x R2.50 comes to R10,000, exactly 5,000 x R2 (our arithmetic).
The buy opens the round from the base game at 100 times the current total bet (R200 at R2) and is disabled while the ante is on. The rules give 96.50% for normal play, the ante and the buy alike: the options change what you pay, not the return, and neither switching between them nor any staking system beats the house edge.

Pros, cons and verdict ⚖️
- Eight of a symbol pay in any position
- Hearts of 2x to 500x can land in the base game too
- In free spins the total multiplier lasts the whole round
- 96.50% for normal play, the ante and the buy alike
- The nine symbols in the table pay nothing below eight
- The rules tie the free spins total to a new heart in a winning spin
- At 5,000x the round stops and unplayed features are lost
- The buy costs 100x the bet, R200 at R2
A medium-volatility pay-anywhere slot built around its winged hearts: they add up within one tumble sequence in the base game and build a lasting total in free spins. Below twelve of a kind the gems pay 0.25x to 1.5x the bet, by our reading of the table. Choose it for the way the multipliers add up rather than for what eight to eleven gems pay.
Starlight Princess FAQ ❓
Is Starlight Princess high or medium volatility?
Medium, by the game's own screens: the intro badge and the rules page both read MEDIUM VOLATILITY, which Pragmatic explains as paying out steadily with pays from low to very high. The studio's September 2021 launch post called it 'a highly-volatile experience'; this page follows the screen inside the game.
What is the maximum win in Starlight Princess?
5,000 times the bet, per the base-game banner and the rules; on a R2 spin that is R10,000 (our arithmetic). Reaching it stops the round, and the features still to come are forfeited. With the ante on, the rules read 4,000x the bet: on a R2.50 ante spin, the same R10,000 by our arithmetic.
Do the multipliers carry over from spin to spin?
In the base game the rules apply the hearts' sum to one tumble sequence's win. Only free spins keep a total, to which a heart in a winning spin adds its value for the rest of the round.
Is this the same game as the later Starlight Princess editions?
No. Pragmatic publishes Starlight Christmas (2022), Starlight Princess 1000 (2023), Starlight Princess Pachi (2024) and Starlight Princess Super Scatter (2025) on pages of their own, each with its own demo, so they are different games. This page covers the September 2021 original, whose multiplier hearts go up to 500x.
