Book of the Fallen is a 2021 book slot from Pragmatic Play, a chapter of its John Hunter series, on five reels of three rows and ten paylines. One symbol, a book with the Eye of Anubis, is both the wild and the scatter, and three of them start 10 free spins. Before the round you choose the symbol that expands over its reel. A Super Spin bet brings that expansion to every base game spin for 10x the stake. Pragmatic rates it medium volatility and caps a win at 5,000x the bet.

The same spin in motion: the five reels stop one after another, the three pharaoh masks on the middle row light up, and the win counter climbs to $8.00 while CREDIT goes from $99,980.00 to $99,988.00. The demo counts in dollars; a South African casino shows rand.

The end of a spin in Pragmatic Play's free demo at a $2.00 bet, with the Super Spin switch at OFF: three golden pharaoh masks stand on the middle row of reels 1 to 3, a line runs through them, and the bar reads WIN $8.00 and LINE 1 PAYS $8.00, by our count four times the bet. The demo counts in dollars; a South African casino shows rand.

How Book of the Fallen works

The game has five reels of three rows and ten paylines, which the fourth rules page draws one by one. Symbols pay from left to right on adjacent reels starting from the leftmost reel, only the highest win counts on each line, and wins on several lines are added together.

Pragmatic's game page sets it in "a tomb that time has forgotten", with symbols from ancient Egypt as the higher pays and its explorer John Hunter on the reels. The rules name no symbols; by our description of their pictures the four top symbols are the explorer, a golden pharaoh mask, Anubis and a winged golden ankh, and the low ones are the letters A, K, Q, J and the number 10.

The book is the only special symbol. The first rules page: "This symbol is both SCATTER and WILD and substitutes for all symbols." The book has its own paytable row, and five wilds pay by it. Three or more anywhere on the reels start the free spins.

Book of the Fallen paytable in multiples of the total bet

The first rules page prints each line win in dollars for a $2.00 total bet. We turned those into multiples of the total bet by halving them (our arithmetic). The book's row is printed in multiples of the total bet already.

SymbolFiveFourThreeTwo
Explorer 500x 100x 10x 1x
Pharaoh mask 200x 40x 4x 0.5x
Anubis or ankh 75x 10x 3x 0.5x
A or K 15x 4x 0.5x -
Q, J or 10 10x 2.5x 0.5x -
Book, wild and scatter 200x 20x 2x -

Free spins with an expanding symbol you choose 🎁

Three or more books give 10 free spins. The second rules page: "Before the round starts, the player can select a symbol to be the special expanding symbol." That choice is the difference from the book slot our site already covers: on Book of Dead, as our page on it describes, the game picks the expanding symbol at random.

During the free spins the regular wins are paid first. Then, in the rules' words, "the special symbol expands vertically to cover all 3 positions on the reel" and "pays according to its paytable, on all reels, even on non-adjacent positions". It does not always grow: "Expansion is triggered only if enough symbols for a win are present." By our reading of the paytable, that means two of the explorer, the pharaoh mask, Anubis or the ankh, and three of a letter or the 10.

So the choice trades frequency against size. Q, J or 10 pays 10x for five, while the explorer pays 500x and needs only two to expand (our arithmetic from the table above). The screen where you pick the symbol for Super Spins says it in one line: "The bigger the value, the higher the volatility". The rules give no odds for how often any symbol lands, so neither choice can be called better.

Three or more books during the round add 10 more free spins with the same symbol, and "there is no limit to the number of possible re-triggers".

Super Spin ante bet: the expansion on every spin, at ten times the price

A switch beside the reels turns on what the third rules page calls the SUPER SPIN ANTE BET. The player pays 10x the current total bet for every spin, and each spin then plays like a free spin: you preselect an expanding symbol, and every spin while the switch is on lets that symbol expand and pay anywhere. In the demo, with the switch on, the BET field moves from $2.00 to $20.00.

The line that matters is the next one: "When playing with ante bet symbol wins are according to base bet, not including the 10x increase paid for the SUPER SPIN feature." On a R2 base bet a Super Spin costs R20, and five explorers on a line still pay R1,000, as they would on an ordinary R2 spin (our arithmetic). The fourth rules page puts the return of Super Spin play at 96.49%, against 96.50% for the game.

Three ways to play, priced on a R2 base bet

Prices are the multiples the rules give; the rand column is our arithmetic. The RTP figures are those of the fourth rules page.

Return, volatility and the 5,000x cap 📊

The game page on pragmaticplay.com gives an RTP of 96.50%, and the fourth rules page of the demo says the same. A MEDIUM VOLATILITY label stands on the intro screen and on the fourth rules page, which explains it as games that "pay out steadily and the range of pays varies from low to very high".

Wins are capped. The second rules page: "The maximum win amount is limited to 5,000x bet in both base game and free spins. If the total win of a FREE SPINS ROUND reaches 5,000x bet the round immediately ends, win is awarded and all remaining free spins are forfeited." At R2 a spin that is R10,000 by our arithmetic. The cap line reads the same with the Super Spin switch on.

No pattern of bets or symbol choices beats the house edge.

Pros, cons and verdict ⚖️

Pros
  • You choose the expanding symbol for the free spins yourself
  • Free spins retrigger with no limit in the rules
  • Super Spins bring the expansion into the base game
  • Three RTP figures published, one for each way to play
Cons
  • A Super Spin costs 10x the stake and pays on the base bet
  • Ten lines and no base game feature but the paid Super Spin
  • Expansion needs enough symbols for a win before it happens
  • A round stops at 5,000x the bet, and free spins left are lost

A classic book slot with one real decision in it: which symbol expands. The Super Spin bet sells that expansion spin by spin at ten times the price, under a 5,000x cap per round.

Book of the Fallen FAQ ❓

How do you trigger the free spins in Book of the Fallen?

Land three or more book symbols anywhere on the reels for 10 free spins; the book's paytable row gives 2x, 20x or 200x the total bet. Before the round begins you pick the symbol that will expand. The round can also be bought for 100x the bet.

Can I choose the expanding symbol?

Yes. The rules say the player can select the special expanding symbol before the free spins start, and before Super Spins. It expands over its whole reel after the regular wins, but only when enough of it lands for a win, and then pays on all reels, adjacent or not.

What is the maximum win in Book of the Fallen?

5,000x the bet, in the base game and in the free spins, by the second rules page. A free spins round that reaches it ends at once and pays, and the free spins left are lost. At R2 a spin that is R10,000 by our arithmetic.

How is Book of the Fallen different from Book of Dead?

Both use a book as wild and scatter and an expanding symbol in free spins. In Book of the Fallen the player chooses that symbol and can buy the expansion on every spin with the Super Spin bet; on Book of Dead, as our page explains, the game picks it at random.
