Betway SA FICA: the documents and how to send them

Licensed in the Western Cape and Mpumalanga

Betway SA says it is required to collect identification documents from every customer. Its own pages say which documents it asks for and where to send them, but two of them give a different channel and a different waiting time.

The documents Betway asks for

Betway's FAQ names a copy of your ID and proof of residence, adding that the proof of residence is usually needed only later, when you ask for a withdrawal.

Its How to FICA page shows four ID documents it accepts: a green barcoded ID book, a smart card ID, a driver's licence and a passport. For a smart card or a driver's licence, both sides. Its terms (clause 3.5) accept a driver's licence, front and back, only when you cannot produce an ID document for reasons Betway accepts.

As an additional validation the How to FICA page asks for a bank statement for a South African bank account no older than 3 months from the registration date, and for every document to be in colour with all four corners visible.

Its terms and conditions allow Betway to ask, at registration or at any time, for your ID, proof of address (an account from a municipality, or from a bank in the case of a mortgaged property) and proof of your bank account, none older than three months. Before paying out it may ask for proof of your bank account, and its FAQ says the bank statement has to show the account number, the bank's name and the branch code: Betway pays only into the account holder's own bank account.

How to send them

Both pages say an account can be verified automatically at registration. If yours is not, the How to FICA page says: log in, choose "Upload Now" in the pop-up and upload a copy of your ID; you get an e-mail once the documents are verified. The FAQ instead says to e-mail a copy of your ID to fica@betway.co.za, after which Betway activates the account.

Changing your mobile number or resetting your password asks for a liveness check, by its FAQ.

How long it takes

The FAQ says reviewing your documents may take up to 24 business hours; the How to FICA page says up to 48 hours, longer at peak times and at weekends. The page also says Raging River Trading may suspend an account that has not met FICA requirements.

Our FICA guide explains what FICA is and why operators ask for it.

We hold no account there and have not contacted it; if a page has changed since, Betway SA's own page is the final word.
