Shamrock Trio - Hold & Respin is a NetGaming slot on five reels of three rows with 20 fixed lines, set among green Irish hills, rainbows and pots of gold. Green, red and blue clover coins decide which of seven Hold and Respin features you get: a multiplier wheel, two grids at once, a fourth respin, or a mix. A full grid wins the MEGA SHAMROCK at 5,000 times the bet. NetGaming gives an RTP of 94.41%.

How Shamrock Trio pays

All 20 lines are always in play: the RULES screen of NetGaming's free demo calls them fixed, with a minimum of 20 coins a spin. Line wins count from the leftmost reel to the right on consecutive reels, the clover coins excepted, and each line pays only its highest win.

The leprechaun marked WILD stands in for every symbol except the three clover coins, and pays on its own line too. Above the cards sit four picture symbols: a green top hat, a gold horseshoe, a green boot and a gold harp, as we read the paytable pictures. The A, K, Q and J fill the rest of the reels.

By our arithmetic from the table below, five top hats or five wilds return 20 times the total bet and three of the Q or J a tenth of it.

What a line pays on a 20.00 bet

The Payouts page of the demo's PAYTABLE shows these amounts at a total bet of 20.00 in the demo's pounds; the multiple of the bet in the last column is our arithmetic. Symbol names are our reading of the pictures.

What a line pays on a 20.00 bet
SymbolFiveFourThreeFive as a multiple of the bet
Leprechaun (wild) 400.00 80.00 40.00 20x
Top hat 400.00 80.00 40.00 20x
Horseshoe 120.00 40.00 20.00 6x
Boot 60.00 30.00 15.00 3x
Harp 60.00 30.00 15.00 3x

Q or J 20.00 5.00 2.00 1x

Three clover coins and their pots

Green, red and blue clover coins 'can appear anywhere on the reels.' Each one is stored in the pot of its colour above the reels, labelled MULTIPLIER, DOUBLE and EXTRA SPIN, and 'Each pot will reset when returning from their respective pot feature.'

Green ties to Multiplier, red to Double, blue to Extra Spins. One or more coins of a colour 'can trigger' its feature, and two or three colours together can trigger their combination: seven features in all, each played as Hold and Respin. The rules give no chance for a coin to start a feature and do not say what the pots' fill level does.

Hold and Respin and the MEGA SHAMROCK

The feature plays on a grid of 15 empty positions and 'starts with 3 or 4 respins.' Every time at least one credit coin lands, the count goes back to its starting number. It ends when the respins run out or, in the rules' words, 'all positions on game(s) are filled with credit coin symbols.'

At the end, 'the credit coin values are multiplied by the bet amount and divided by 100.' NetGaming's own shots show coins reading 100 to 700, so a 400 coin pays 4 times the bet by our arithmetic, R80 on a R20 spin; the rules do not list the values a coin can carry or how often each comes.

Fill every position and you win the MEGA SHAMROCK, '5000xbet', on top of the sum of the coins: R100,000 on a R20 spin by our arithmetic; the demo's own banner read 100,000.00 at a 20.00 bet. 'Multiplier is not applied to MEGA SHAMROCK value', so the wheel described below can multiply the coins but never the 5,000x prize. In the double features the rules speak of 'all positions on the game(s)'; we read that as both grids full.

The seven features, colour by colour

Each row as the RULES screen of the demo describes it.

The seven features, colour by colour
Coins on screenFeatureGridsRespinsWheel 2x-10x
Green Multiplier 1 3 Yes
Red Double 2 3 each No
Blue Extra Spins 1 4 No
Red and blue Double & Extra Spins 2 4 each No
Green and blue Multiplier & Extra Spins 1 4 Yes
Green and red Multiplier & Double 2 3 each Yes
Green, red and blue Multiplier, Double & Extra Spins 2 4 Yes

What each colour adds

Green brings the wheel. 'A wheel with multiplier values (2x-10x) on its wedges appears. The player is prompted to spin the wheel.' The value under the pointer is stored, and the coins won in the feature are multiplied by it at the end. The rules give no odds for the wedges.

Red doubles the playing field: '2 new games with 15 empty positions each appear on the screen', each starting with its own respins and 'playing independently'. Blue keeps a single grid but starts it with 4 respins instead of 3.

For the three-colour feature the rules say 'The game starts with 4 respins', without the 'each' of Double & Extra Spins; four on each grid is our reading.

Buy Bonus at 80 times the bet

In the base game a BUY BONUS button sits beside the reels. 'Buy Bonus feature is played at 80x Total Cash Bet' and enters one of the seven features; the rules do not say how the feature is chosen or whether some come more often. At a R20 bet that is R1,600 a buy, by our arithmetic, matching the £1,600.00 the demo's button showed at a 20.00 bet.

The return is a little higher on a bought feature: 'The long-term expected payback is 94.67% with the Buy Bonus feature', against 94.41% for the game as a whole. Your casino's own rules show whether its version has the button and which RTP it runs.

Pros, cons and verdict

Pros
  • Every one of the seven features plays Hold and Respin, with its rules on screen
  • The MEGA SHAMROCK is a stated 5,000 times the bet, paid on top of the coins
  • In the Double feature each of the two grids runs its own respins
Cons
  • An RTP of 94.41%, on the low side for a slot
  • Line pays are small: five of the top symbol return 20 times the bet
  • The rules give no chance for a coin to start a feature, and no coin values

An Irish Hold and Respin slot whose interest lies in how the three coin colours combine: a wheel up to 10x on the coins, a second grid, a fourth respin, or all three at once, with a 5,000x prize for a full board. NetGaming rates it Medium - High, and its 94.41% return is on the low side. Check the RTP in your casino's own rules before you play; no way of staking changes the house edge.
