How Lightning Roulette works
Underneath, it is European roulette: the numbers 1 to 36 and a single zero on a real wheel, streamed live, with the ball launched automatically. Every standard bet other than the straight-up pays what it pays on an ordinary table.
The addition is that once betting closes, the presenter pulls a lever and a random number generator strikes between one and five numbers, each with a multiplier from 50x to 500x. If you have a straight-up bet on a struck number and the ball lands on it, you are paid its multiplier on your stake: 50x is 49 to 1, 500x is 499 to 1.
Here is the part worth understanding, and it is the reason we wrote this page. In standard roulette a straight-up win pays 35 to 1. In Lightning Roulette it does not: a straight-up win on a number the lightning missed pays 29 to 1, and the money taken out of it is what funds the multipliers.
So the multipliers are not a gift on top of the normal game. They are the same straight-up payout redistributed into a rarer, larger form, and not quite all of it comes back: Evolution puts the return on a straight-up bet at 97.10%, against 97.30% on every other standard bet. Most straight-up wins pay less than on a standard table in exchange for the occasional multiplier. That is a legitimate and entertaining trade, and it is a trade, not a bonus.
One more consequence: the multipliers only touch straight-up bets. If you bet red, or odd, or a dozen, the Lightning layer does nothing for you, and it costs you nothing either: those bets pay what they pay on a plain European table, and Evolution gives them the same 97.30% return. Here they are simply ordinary roulette.
What this means in practice 🎮
- The feature is only for straight-up bets. The whole mechanic attaches to single-number bets. Red or black on this table is plain European roulette: the same payout and, by Evolution's figures, the same 97.30% return. It costs you nothing extra and gives you nothing extra.
- It is a variance trade, not extra value. Reduced standard payout, occasional large multiplier. The multipliers do not add to the long-run return: Evolution puts the straight-up bet at 97.10%, a little under the 97.30% of every other standard bet.
- The Lightning Chaser returns the least. Where the table offers it, a Lightning Chaser bet goes on every Lightning number of the round, whichever they turn out to be, and pays 49 to 1 up to 499 to 1 when one of them wins. Evolution gives it a return of 95.42%, the lowest on the table.
- Live tables are expensive on mobile data. This is a video stream, unlike a slot or a crash game. On a metered prepaid package an hour at a live table uses far more data than an hour on a slot.
- Table minimums are usually higher. Live dealer tables carry a real operating cost, and the minimum stake reflects that. Check it before you sit down with a small budget.
