Rugby Betting in South Africa: Markets and Settlement Rules
Rugby bets look simple until a match ends level, goes to extra time or is stopped early. This guide explains the common markets and shows how four South African bookmakers settle those cases under their own published rules.

Where South African teams play
When we read the match centre on sarugby.co.za on 6 October 2026, it listed United Rugby Championship fixtures for the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers on 10 October, in the same competition as clubs such as Munster, Ulster, Glasgow, Benetton and the Scarlets. The Currie Cup Premier Division, a domestic competition, had already played its 2026 final on 12 September.
For the Springboks, the SA Rugby home page listed the next match on the same day: Italy against the Springboks in the Nations Championship on 7 November 2026. Fixtures move, so check the official match centre for dates and kick-off times before you rely on them.
The common rugby markets
Which of these a bookmaker offers on a match is shown on its own site.
- Match result. A bet on which team wins. A three-way market has a home win, a draw and an away win. A two-way market has only the two teams, so the bookmaker's rules decide what happens to your stake if the match ends level: the table below shows what each one says.
- Handicap. One team starts with a points start or deficit, for example +7.5 or -7.5, and the bet is settled on the score after that adjustment. A whole-number line, such as -7, can land exactly on the margin; in the rules of Apexbets and ZARbet a two-way handicap that ties is settled as void, a push, and the stake is returned.
- Total points. A bet on whether both teams together score over or under a line, such as 45.5.
- Winning margin. A bet on the band the final margin falls into, for example a win by 1 to 12 points or by 13 or more. Apexbets and ZARbet say this market is settled on the margin at full time, and a tie is one of its options.
- Multibets. Several selections combined into one bet, where every selection has to win. Our multibet calculator shows what a combination returns before you place it.
How each bookmaker settles a rugby bet
Each cell is our short summary of the bookmaker's own betting rules on its own site, read on 6 October 2026. Rules change and each bookmaker's own page is the one that counts, so read it before you bet. Interbet's row comes from its published live (in-play) betting rules and applies to live bets only. A dash means that page says nothing on the point.

What the rules mean for your bet
Eighty minutes is the line that matters most. Apexbets, ZARbet and SuperSportBet settle rugby bets, unless otherwise stated, on 80 minutes of play including stoppage time. Interbet's rules for live (in-play) bets do the same for live markets and say in so many words that extra time is left out. Apexbets and ZARbet name the markets that do include it: To Lift Trophy, To Qualify and Win in Extra-Time, among others, count extra time and a kicking competition if played.
A draw is where two-way markets differ. In a Draw No Bet market, Apexbets and ZARbet return the stake if the game ends level, and Apexbets does the same for Match Winner, unless extra time or another way of deciding the match is used. In a three-way market the draw is a selection of its own, so a home or away bet on a drawn match loses.
At Apexbets, ZARbet and SuperSportBet bets on an abandoned match are void, apart from markets where the outcome is already determined. SuperSportBet also keeps bets on a postponed or abandoned match open until midnight of the day after the scheduled date; Interbet's live rules give an interrupted match 48 hours from kick-off to continue. For a multibet, ZARbet's general rules say a bet with a void selection is settled on the remaining selections only.
How rugby odds and the margin work 📊
Odds tell you what a bet returns, and they also carry the bookmaker's margin. Our example: a handicap market prices both teams at 1.90. A R100 bet at 1.90 returns R190, your R100 stake plus R90. Each price implies a chance of 1 / 1.90, about 52.6%, and the two sides together come to about 105.3% instead of 100%. The extra 5.3 points is the margin built into the odds, and it is how the bookmaker earns over many bets.

Before you open an account

Does extra time count in a rugby match bet?
Apexbets, ZARbet and SuperSportBet settle rugby bets on 80 minutes of play including stoppage time unless otherwise stated; Interbet's rules for live bets exclude extra time in so many words. Markets such as To Lift Trophy or To Qualify include extra time at Apexbets and ZARbet.
What happens to a two-way bet if a rugby match is a draw?
It depends on the market and the bookmaker. In a Draw No Bet market, Apexbets and ZARbet return the stake. Apexbets also returns Match Winner stakes on a draw, unless extra time or another tie-break decides the match. In a three-way market the draw is its own selection.
What happens if a rugby match is abandoned?
Apexbets, ZARbet and SuperSportBet void bets on an abandoned match, apart from markets whose outcome was already decided. SuperSportBet keeps bets open until midnight of the day after the scheduled date, and Interbet's rules for live bets allow 48 hours from kick-off for an interrupted match to continue.
What is a handicap bet in rugby?
One team gets a points start or deficit, such as +7.5 or -7.5, and the bet is settled on the adjusted score. With a whole-number line the result can tie exactly; Apexbets and ZARbet settle a tied two-way handicap as void and return the stake.
